Dark, Moody, Dramatic And Dreamy Rooms, Spaces, + Design
They’re dark. They’re dreamy. They’re the rooms that make me feel snuggled up like I’m underneath a weighted blanket. There’s something mysterious and lovely and dramatic about the pull of a deeply colored room.
I think for a lot of us, you have to see it to believe it. I know black wouldn’t be my first color choice on the paint aisle, but the more I look at spaces rocking this dark aesthetic, the more I love it! I went down a rabbit hole a few months back of dark green spaces too, which you should check out if you love these deep punchy rooms like I do.

Some spaces seem to play into the dark and cozy aesthetic with complimentary dark furniture, decor, textiles, and art choices - while others balance the dark neutrals with softer neutrals too.
Some spaces go a bit more maximalist and mix in brighter colors around the dark walls, ceilings, floors, etc, to accentuate the space; using the dark backdrop to make their furniture, art, or decor stand out. (I love me some Maximalism. Check out my post here on some MAX rooms that make me drool big time.)
Either way you slice it is personal preference. All of the living rooms, bedrooms, kitchens, and bathrooms gathered here march to the beat of their own drum and reflect varying styles, and they all look amazing!

Back when we were all younger my brother and his wife painted their bedroom a deeply dark blue - somewhere between navy and black. I loved it! It had a dramatic and deeply relaxing effect.
They had a fireplace in their room, too, which was only ornamental by then but was painted a crisp white and looked great in contrast. All of their artwork and cool framed concert handbills popped against the dark moody walls… and I imagine it would be like slumbering in a bear’s cave, too, if you pulled the curtains closed!

I’m kind of in love with the home shown in the three photos above.
From the worn wood floors to the dark dark dark walls (are they black or are they a dark brown?) that carry up and over onto the ceiling. It’s a bold choice! I definitely wouldn’t imagine that myself, or imagine it to look as good as it does - but I think it looks amazing in this space. Obsessed with the floral metal floor lamp and though I can’t make out the pattern very well, I love the metallic accent panel behind the bed, too!
A very bohemian, artistic, French country vibe. Shabby chic never looked so good.

So if you’re thinking of adding some depth and richness to your space but wondering what to do to decorate or layer in - think about adding in some plants (real or faux - faux plant shopping list linked here) and maybe some metallic decor/furniture elements (I’d go for a gold, brass, or copper look) to add to the luxe feel.
Lots of these rooms have wood floors and or furniture. If you don’t, baskets can start to bring in that feel on a much cheaper budget and can be easily rearranged and displayed on a table, hanging on the wall, or stacked and shown-off on a shelf somewhere! (I’ll also gather sticks, twigs, or other outside clippings and arrange them in a big vase if I’m looking to add some ‘earthiness’ to a room.)
It seems like these dark walls lend themselves to more styles than you would think. So many of these spaces evoke a classic country farmhouse feel to me… or a farmhouse with more of an eclectic bohemian vibe and twist. The modern industrial feel works really well, too. Regardless of the furniture and decor choice, each space feels - dramatic. (They also feel like perfectly cozy rooms to be in as we segway into Fall and I start feeling all Autumnal!)
