Loft Living Inspiration: Magical Modern-Industrial Spaces

Kevin and I lived in a very cool, big, modern, open floorplan loft in Richmond Virginia for a few years before moving out to Oregon. It was our first place together. I stamped our first apartment key into some Sculpey clay and made a Christmas ornament for it and everything.

The building, built in 1927 and shown below, has always been well known to Richmond locals and was even added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2012. It was the old Southern Biscuit Company / FFV factory (Famous Foods of Virginia) that made lots of popular cookies, Girl Scout cookies, and other popular midcentury treats. After shutting down it was abandoned for several decades, then renovated and converted into 178 uniquely laid out loft apartments.

Our giant swivel-hinged windows were so tall that we finally rigged up an eight foot pole with a hook on the end that we’d use so we could reach up high enough to open them. While our unit didn’t have exposed brick walls, several of the ones we looked at did. One unit we saw (that had exposed brick) also had several of the factory’s original heavy iron oven doors still bolted across the wall. Swoon!

My appreciation for beautifully designed lofts has grown ever since living in that FFV Cookie Factory Loft building. We loved the mix of clean lines and metal and the mix of smooth floors and worn and weathered wood and the big oversized windows. Definitely the big oversized windows.

So I’ve compiled a collection of some lofts that make me majorly swoon. I’d take any of these spaces in a heartbeat (if I could afford them) and would happily live out my days feeling like the coolest cat there ever was.

Here are some of my favorite dreamy lofts. Enjoy!

Alright just to disclaim - some of these spaces (like the one above) don’t have a visible “LOFT” area or access that I can see - and I might be straddling the line between loft and just rooms with lots of exposed brick and giant windows… but I don’t care. A handful of these daylight-filled open plan spaces are getting thrown into the mix too, because I love them.

What do you think?! If you got lucky and scored one of these awesome loft properties how would you style it? Ultra sleek, modern, monochrome? Funkier and colorful, like a big hangout pad?

Whatever your style, lofts are just a beautiful canvas to lay down on — I think we can all agree on that. I’m just a sucker for those big windows.
