Zillow Porn . . . It's a thing.
About a year ago Saturday Night Live aired a sketch, posted below, (while beloved actor Dan Levy was hosting) that totally nailed a demographic of current Americans:
The Zillow porn addicts
I never thought I myself would be susceptible.
It always starts harmlessly enough.
Maybe I wanted to see the available homes in my zip code that were built between 1925 and 1965? Or the A-frame cabins within my Central Oregon area?
Four hours later and I’ve added Hearts and Saves to 61 houses spanning the country.
A few hours later, and although I live in Central Oregon and have never spent more than a few days in the Northeast, I am now looking at farmhouses from the 1800s in the Vermont countryside, and eleven bedroom Victorian homes with gingerbread trimming in upstate New York.
So needless to say, when this sketch aired in early 2021, I felt seen.
Cheers to my fellow 20, 30, 40+, year-olds who drool alongside me at all the homes we’ll:
never be able to afford; or
homes located in places we may literally never step a single foot.
And how many of my fellow Zillow-junkies search and ogle based on specific filter and keyword searches?
Some of my favorite filters and keyword to search by:
National Historic Register; oldest
Original; craftsman
Library / built in bookcase/shelves
Wrap around porch / full porch / balcony
Secret door
Mature trees; fruit trees; garden; trails
Creek; river; stream; waterfall
